Łukasz Szumowski’s resignation arose many comments and doubts. In the interview, the former Minister of Health explains his decision and reasons.
‘I am leaving now when we know much more about the pandemic. We know how to react. It was like a bolt from the blue when I, together with the Polish government, had to prepare the Health Service to the completely new and critical situation. There were no tests for COVID-19 because we did not know this illness. There were no medical equipment and information was residual. Residual information about the illness and its consequences were more and more dramatic. I resigned after we had prepared Poles for the fight with the virus. Since the beginning of the year, we have been observing the situation in China, then in Europe and Italy’ – explained the former Minister of Health Łukasz Szumowski.
‘I have nothing to reproach myself with. In retrospect, I cannot say that we made mistakes. We made purchase decisions when the world bent over backwards where to buy medical equipment. When the goods became scarce, our work was to secure our Polish hospitals with an adequate number. Every PLN from the unrealized orders will return to the State Budget with liquidated damages and interest. Following the world’s reports, similar situations described in many countries’ – said Szumowski.
Łukasz Szumowski is a Polish cardiologist and a member of the IX Polish Parliament elected from the lists of Law and Justice Party.
